“uddharedaatmanaatmaanam naatmaanamavasaadayeth
aatmaiva hyaatmano bandhuraatmaiva ripuraatmanah “

Let a man raise himself by his own efforts. Let him not degrade himself. Because a person’s best friend or his worst enemy is none other than his own self. This is one of the many beautiful verses from bhagavad gita. This verse clearly explains how only one person is responsible for our falls and victories and that is you.

Krishna was one of the earliest philosophers the world has seen. His philosophical compilation the bhagavad gita is a must read for not just Hindus but everyone too because of its simplistic thoughts and  morals for life that everyone must follow.

Lord Krishna is easily one of the most beloved gods in Hinduism.  As the beloved little Krishna who runs around Mathura enchanting the people with his mischief or the genius mastermind behind the kurukshetra war. In all his forms he never fails to amaze his devotees. As child one of the first gods we are introduced to is Krishna. It is very common to refer to children as kanna or Krishna. The tales of Krishna were bed time stories for kids of our generation.  Now comes a chance for all people to rejoice and re live Krishna’s childhood at the iconic Chandrodaya Temple at Vrindavan Mathura. This is a dream project of swami prabhupada founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (iskcon).

The Chandrodaya temple touted to be the tallest Hindu temple in the world stands at a mighty height of 213 meters consisting of 70 stories. It is really a one of its kind temples in the country.  The temple is in work and expected to be completed in 4 years time. Vrindavan is in every way the perfect place for a monument for Krishna.

Chandrodaya Temple, Vrindavan

Vrindavan has more than 5000 Krishna temples in and around it. Chandrodaya mandir, the summit of architectural beauty sits in its rightful throne at the centre of Vrindavan.  Temples is dotted with temples, often one might even think there are simply too many temples. But they come in all sizes. These temples have served as reservoirs of culture and beliefs for the masses for centuries. Since times ancient we have been known for our architecture. Most of our architectural feats are temples and religious landmarks. The Brihadeeswarar temple in Thanjavur and the Jagadamba temple in Khajuraho are known worldwide as architectural marvels. At a time when there was no technology or machinery available for construction, building such high rise monuments was a huge feat and they stand strong till today which is proof for the skilled workmanship behind it.

Iskcon temples in India are more than just places for worship. They promote cultural oneness. They are places of serenity and calmness. That is why people throng iskcon temples at Bangalore and Chennai. The highlights of the chandrodaya mandir are Krishna Heritage Museum, Krishna Study Center, The Vrindavan Chandrodaya Temple will also feature an indoor Krishna Lila Park that will house several attractions as well as multiple expos for visitors and devotees visiting the temple round the year. The temple is spread out across 62 acres of forested land which is supposed to be a recreation of the vrindavan forests which were present during shri Krishna’s time.  Sources for these recreations have been deciphered from bhagavad gita and other sacred text that describes twelve verdant forests (dvadashakanana) .the temple will feature scenes from the dwapara Yuga in which Krishna was born.   An awe inspiring fact is that the temple authorities have gone to the length of even recreating the Yamuna River and beautiful lotus filled ponds which are depicted in Krishna tales. Modern features of the temple include a viewing tower from which one can see the Yamuna, Krishna janmabhooomi (birth place of lord Krishna) and maybe even the taj mahal.

Architecture of the Chandrodaya Mandir

This will turn out to be a major attraction for Indian and foreign tourists alike. The temple is also expected to be entertaining for children too. Instead of reciting mantras and chants, the recreation of Krishna episodes is bound to captivate children and adults. So much creative potential has been tapped for the making of this magnificent cultural monument.  The entire structure will sport shades of blue and green like the peacock feather that decorated lord Krishna’s head. The temple doesn’t strictly conform to traditional temple architecture. It has streaks of modernity amidst traditional glimpses. Hence the temple is a culmination of modernity and tradition with neither overpowering the other. This is expected to bring in modern day youngsters who dread going to temples.

The temple project has received a pat on the back from the president Pranab Mukherjee too. He expressed happiness that the Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir will strive to disseminate the philosophical message of the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam in an easy to understand and rational manner. The President said that message is particularly relevant for India as a society today. While India as a nation move up the developmental ladder, it is essential that our spiritual core, which forms the bedrock of our civilization, remains undiluted and strong as ever.

The temple serves not only as a place of worship for Hindus but also seeks to promote cultural and spiritual harmony in the name of lord Krishna by organizing year around activities to promote social and cultural wellbeing .in addition the temple is also said to attract world thinkers, leaders and other enquiring minds to know more about Lord Sri Krishna and His soothing, healing message for a harried world the temple also has a noble goal of inculcating the glorious Vedic values in today’s youth and thereby with examples and life philosophy drawn from the Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavatam.
