Prabodhini Ekadashi is otherwise known as Dev Uthani Ekadashi or Devutthana Ekadashi. It is an auspicious day celebrated on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the Hindu Calendar month Karthika, which in the Gregorian calendar falls in the month of October or November.

It is believed that Lord Vishnu awakens from his four months of sleep on this day, after  having slept on Devshayani Ekadashi. The Prabodhini Ekadashi day also marks the end of Chaturmas.

It is also believed that Lord Vishnu married to goddess Tulsi on this Day.

Prabodhini Ekadashi is followed by Kartik Poornima, a day celebrated as Dev Diwali or Diwali of gods.

It is believed that taking vrat on Prabodhini Ekadashi gets rid of all your sins and helps in achieving liberation (moksha).

Prabodhini Ekadashi Vrat Katha

There are many legends associated with Prabodini Ekadashi, or Dev Uthani Ekadasi. One among those legends is described below.

According to this vrat katha, Lord Vishnu had a irregular sleeping pattern. Sometimes he used to remain awake for months together and sometimes would sleep continuously for several months. This made Lakshmi Devi unhappy.

Even Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma, Devas and Saints who used to visit Lord Vishnu for his darshan had to wait for long periods while Lord Vishnu was asleep. That’s not all, demons used to take advantage of this period of Lord Vishnu’s sleep and inflict pain on human beings and this lead to the spread of Adharma on earth.

One day, when Lord Vishnu woke up from sleep, he found Devas and Saints approaching him asking for help. They conveyed to Lord Vishnu that a demon named Shankhyayan had stolen all the Vedas and this deprived people of knowledge. Lord Vishnu promised to get back the Vedas. He then fought for several days with Demon Shankhyayan and got back the Vedas.

Goddess Lakshmi, Devas and the Saints thought that Lord Vishnu will then go to sleep because of a tiring long battle, but instead Lord Vishnu remained awake and promised to restrict his sleep to a period of four months starting from Ashadha Shudda Ekadasi and to Kartik Shuddha Ekadasi which is the Prabodini Ekadasi or Dev Uthani Ekadasi.
