Vishwakarma Puja Sankranti Moment – 01:29

Vishwakarma Puja day is celebrated to acknowledge that lord Vishwakarma alone is the creator of the entire universe and the things within, and to offer worship and thankfulness to him. This is what lends the festival of Vishwakarma Puja its significance. Lord Vishwakarma is the architect of the Hindu Religion. The name vishwakarma means ‘maker of all.’ He is the spiritual creator through various yugas and it is believed that it was only Lord VIshwakarma who generated the Heavens in the Satya Yuga, Dwaraka in Dwapar Yuga, Lanka in the Treta Yuga and Hastinapur and Indraprastha in the Kali Yuga. It was he who formed the chariots and various weapons of Gods and gave each its unique divine attributes. And it was he who revealed the sciences of industry to us because of which we see the progress that has been made. Lord Vishwakarma is described as the ultimate reality in the Rig Veda, whose name in Sanskrit means “All Accomplishing”, and who is believed by the Hindus to be the “Principal Universal Architect” who gave form to the celestial architecture of all that is in this universe with his own hands. And as a mark of reverence, he is worshipped as the patron of all the engineers, architects, artisans, craftsmen, weavers, mechanics, smiths, welders, industrial workers, and factory workers.

Falling on Padyami, the first day of Kartika Masa, Vishwakarma Puja is observed on the fourth day of Diwali, i.e. the day after Diwali. In some parts of the country including Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Orissa, Vishwakarma Puja is observed on 17th September every year and doesn’t change according to the lunar calendar. Vishwakarma Puja calculations are done according to Bisuddhasidhanta. Vishwakarma Puja falls on the last day of the Bengali month Bhadra which is also known as Bhadra Sankranti or Kanya Sankranti.

Significance of Vishwakarma Puja

The divine creator, Lord Vishwakarma is the main deity for all the craftsmen and architects and it is a long followed tradition and custom for all the craftsmen to pray with their tools to him. Lord Vishwakarma is celebrated as Lord Brahma in the Rig Veda. He was also one of the fourteen valuable things born out of the Samundra Manthan. The festival is celebrated mainly in factories and industries, regularly on the shop floor. This day, is noted not only by the engineering and architects but also by artisans, craftsmen, mechanics, smiths, welders, industrial workers, factory workers and others. They pray for an improved future, safe working condition and, on top of all, success in their individual fields. Workers also pray for the smooth operation of various machines.
