Mangottu Kavu Temple, Kerala

Mangottu Kavu temple is positioned in Athipotta Village, near Alathur in Palakkad District in the state of Kerala, India. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Sree Mangottu Bhagavathi Devi. The Goddess is considered as the younger sister of Parakkattu Bhagavathi.

The legend says that the Mangotty Bhagavathi is supposed to have come to this place to fulfill the desire of a weaver. Kuttan, a weaver, was an ardent devotee of the Goddess. They went to a festival in order to sell clothes. Suddenly, there was a whirlwind which took away the Goddess’ clothes during the procession. Kuttan immediately gave the cloth he had. The cloth that fell on the Goddess was attached to the idol. It is said that the Goddess resided in the place where Kuttan kept his umbrella when he got tired.

The temple is open for devotees from 4.30 AM to 11 PM and from 5 PM to 8 PM.

Vela, Utsavam, Laksharchanaare the major festivals celebrated in the temple. Vela festival is celebrated in the month of April. This festival is conducted by the people nearby known as Desam. This event draws a large number of devotees from all over the state. During Navarathri days, a special pooja is performed in the temple.

Poojas such as Nirmalyam, Ganapathy Homam, Usha Pooja, Ucha Pooja, Deeparadhana and Athazha Pooja are performed here.
