Suchindram Shakti Peeth, Kanyakumari

Suchindram is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and is placed in the southernmost district of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, India. This place is where it is believed that the Upper Teeth of Maa Sati fell.

The idols are Devi Maa as “Maa Narayani” (wife of Narayan) and Lord Shiva as “Sangharor Samhara” (the destroyer). Sometimes the goddess is popularly known as Kanya Kumari or Bhagavathy Amman. Samhara Bhairava is present in a nearby village. At Suchindram, he is locally called Sthanu Shiva.

Suchindram has a temple dedicated to Sri Sthanumalayan as well who is the representation of the combined forces of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. It is one of the few temples in the country where the Trinities are worshiped. The temple has a beautiful Gopuram, musical pillars.

The art and architecture of this temple is unique and blends with the Tamil Nadu culture. From outside the whole temple looks white, as it is made of white stone. On the other hand, the top part is made of various sculptures that depict the various gods and the fine stone work done on it is highly commendable. There are palm trees planted in front of the Suchindram temple. So much so is the religious importance of this place that every year people in million numbers flock to this part of the country.

How to Reach

History to this place dates back in the time when it is said that the Upper teeth of Maa Sati fell on this place. In order to embark the spiritual importance to this place of fall, a temple was constructed. Over the years there are several renovation being carried out on it.

Navaratri is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion two times a year. On the other hand, Shivaratri is also a major festival being extolled with great joy and happiness. But two major festivals that account the major attraction are the ‘Suchindram maargali festival’ and the ‘Rath Yatra’. During these festival, some people keep fast (not eating any food) as a respect and dedication towards god worship.

Ashokssthmi is the most import ant festival of the hilly goddess celebrating for three days. Following the every year based calendar Mesha sankranti and Raja sankrajti are also important ones for her as a goddess of tantra sastra. A large number of devotees visit the temple and worship to the deity during these days every year.

Kanyakumari’s connectivity to the rest of the country is pretty good and trains from as far as Jammu is available.

By Road, there are a couple of buses that ply from major cities of India towards this sacred site. Railways is the most common mode transportation to reach Kanyakumari. From Kanyakumari, local transportation needs to be taken to reach the Maa Narayani Temple or Suchindram Shakti Peeth.

Nearest airport is Trivandrum.
