A question that often ponders in our mind is as to why we go to temples. We all know that god is omnipresent then why do we need to go? Researches were done and some said  that they get peace when they visit a temple while others said they visit temples as  that’s the family tradition and they cannot break it.

A temple is a pure blend of religious, cultural, educational and social environment. A place where one can transcend from the world of man and help in the various stages of progression to merge with the Ultimate. The way the temple is built, its design , construction, architectural marvels, decorations, rituals performed , the purity that prevails in the temple focuses on the goal of enlightenment and liberation.

Significance of the architecture of the temple:

Every architectural design has a meaning to it. The dome or the vimana that is constructed is to maintain and store that positive vibe and energy and not allow it to evaporate. Even the garbha griha or the sanctum santorum is kept low and the main reason behind being is to prevent the energy which is been generated from escaping into thin air. The arti that is performed helps to boost the energy and transmit it to the devotees. The temple bell which is present when you enter the temple premises is to make sure that the energy in the temple is never static as the vibrations produced each time while ringing the bell creates more energy and a kinetic flow of energy.  That is another reason why our ancestral believed that it is important to clean the cob webs as they trap the energy and it is essential to clap at the corner areas or the attic once in a while to prevent the energy from being static.

The energy sources:

Temples are usually built where the earth’s magnetic wave is maximum and where positive energy is available abundantly. The main idol is thus placed at the core center where there is maximum energy. Usually a copper plate written with some vedic scripts is placed beneath the main idol as copper absorbs the earth’s magnetic waves and radiates it to the surroundings. In this way if an individual visits a temple on a regular basis there is a increased chance of the energy being absorbed in his body. The sanctum santorum is closed on all three sides thus enhancing the energy levels.

The temple has a combination of various forms of energy right from the chemical energy radiated from the fragrance of the flowers and the burning of camphor to the positive energy that comes from the idol and the magnetic energy that gets absorbed by the copper plate  and utensils that are kept in the moolasthanam also called as the garbhagriha.

Often when people visit temples they usually wait for the deeparaadhana to finish so that once the door opens the positive energy radiates and gushes out on to the devotees. The theertam is the water which is used during the puja is usually mixed with cardamom, benzoine, tulsi is sprinkled on to the devotees and this enhances the radiance of the energy to the devotees.

Similar to scientific reason to visiting temples, there is a reason and explanation for a number of other hindu customs and traditions.

Joining our palms together:

Joining hands is a part of the Hindu tradition. It has various significance right from showing respect to the elders to welcoming guests home and even while praying. But the scientific theory behind it lies that while joining the tips of our both hands it exerts pressure on the pressure points of the eyes, ears and minds and activates them. In this way we can remember a particular person for a long time. In addition to that it also makes our body germs free as there is minimal physical contact.

The significance of toe ring:

It is a custom to wear toe ring after marriage. But have we ever pondered the reason behind it? The toe ring is usually worn on the second toe as a particular nerve from the second toe  connects the uterus to the heart . In this way it not only helps to strengthen the uterus but also regulates good blood flow to the uterus and regularise the menstrual cycle as well. Silver toe rings are preferred as it absorbs polar energy which is present in the earth and can transmit it to the body.

Reason behind throwing coins in the river:

There was always a reason behind the various acts that our ancestors performed. Though today we believe that throwing coins into the river brings good luck but the exact reason it that during ancient days the river water was the only source of drinking water. Throwing coins especially copper ones as those were available then would get dissolved in the river and a part of it would enter the human body system which was extremely beneficial.

Significance of applying kumkum:

Between the 2 eyebrows on the forehead there exists a point that helps to control the concentration. Hence while applying kumkum or tilak at this spot it prevents the loss of energy and retains it as the adnya chakra is pressed. Some people believe that on exerting pressure on this point it also enhances the blood supply to the face muscles.

Eating rituals:

It is a common practice whether if we go for a wedding or for family dinner they usually start with food item that are spicy to begin with and we usually end the main course with something sweet. Ever pondered about this? Spicy foods stimulate the secretion of gastric juices and enhance the process of digestion while sweets tend to slow the digestive process and are served usually at the end of the meal.

Reason behind applying mehndi on the hand and feet:

During the weddings we know it’s time to apply mehndi and decorate our hands and legs with that intrinsic artwork. But apart from lending beauty and colour to our hand and feet , mehndi has powerful medicinal use too. It is well known that as the wedding approaches , with the  stress around it can usually take a toll on the bride and even impact her health. Mehndi helps to cool the body and also release the tension in the nerves and thus maintains the health.

Sitting and eating:

During ancient days our ancestors believed on sitting on the floor and eating. They firmly believed sitting in the sukhasan position that is sitting on the floor with cross legged triggers signals to the brain that helps to calm the body down and also enhance the process of digestion.

Position of the head while sleeping:

Nearly most of us believe in the vaastu and we always make it a point to not sleep with our heads towards the north.  Surely there is a scientific reason behind this. It is said that the human body has a magnetic field of its own and of course earth is a giant magnet by itself. So while sleeping with our head towards the north there is asymmetry  between the 2 magnetic fields and this can distort the health of the individual and lead to cardiac issues, altered blood pressure. Moreover while sleeping in that position the iron content in the body gets accumulated in the brain and thereby increasing the concentration in the brain and this can lead to various neurological disorders like headache, Alzheimer’s, cognitive decline, parkinsonism.

Surya namaskar:

It is a common practice for most of the Hindus to wake up early and perform surya namakar. It is considered that waking up early  and looking at the sun during that time is extremely good for the eyes and the body and moreover the brain activites are maximum during that point and helps us do productive work.

Touching the feet:

It is well known practice to touch your elder’s feet and seek their blessings. But why do we do so? It is said that when we touch their feet we leave behind all our ego and is in a state of shraddha  and touch the elder’s feet. Positive energy and vibe gets transmitted from their body to your mind and thereby increases the energy flow as well as cosmic energy transmission.

Application of sindoor:

It is compulsory that married woman should apply sindoor as sindoor is a mix of turmeric lime and metal mercury. It is considered that mercury helps to control the blood pressure removes the stress and strain and it can also enhance the sexual activity of the woman. It is advised to apply sindoor up to  the pituitary gland where the emotional center is located. And this is exactly why sindoor is prohibited for widows.
