Wherever there is the union of purity and depth it produces blue color. The water of the seas and the sky are seen to be blue. Hence, the color blue is also called aasmani or sky color. Both Lord Rama and Lord Krishna are considered to be human avatars of Vishnu, who was a blue skinned God and hence both Rama and Krishna are considered blue skinned, Meghavarnam Shubhaangam or Kekee Kanthaabhneelam. Since God combines both purity and depth or boundlessness, thus, God too is blue.

The color of Vishnu’s skin is described to be new-cloud-like-blue : The blue color that indicates his all-pervasive nature, blue being the color of the infinite sky as well as the infinite ocean on which he resides. The color blue, therefore, symbolizes the infinite and Vishnu is represented as an infinite force. It also symbolizing his vastness as deep as the heavens.

Symbolism and the meaning of the color Blue is a very wide category for which numerous interpretations exist. The most relevant ones are that :

  • The blue stands for the vertical and the spatial, in other words height and depth of the blue sky above and the blue sea below. It symbolizes that Masonry is as wide as these dimensions.
  • It is also interesting to note that blue is considered to be “between black and white”, also commonly identified with two opposing forces, good (white) and evil (black). Thus blue is considered the most neutral of all the colors.

For this reason, the incarnations of Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna, Rama are shown with blue skin color.

Another theory refers to Vishnu implanting two hairs, one black and the other white in Devaki’s womb which miraculously got transferred to Rohini’s and as a result, from the black hair Krishna took birth, with a dark skin, and from the white hair his brother Balarama. In Hinduism, people who have the depth of character and the capacity to fight evil are depicted as blue skinned.  The deity who has the qualities of bravery, manliness, determination, the ability to deal with difficult situations, a stable mind and depth of character is represented as blue colored. Lord Krishna spent his life protecting humanity and destroying evil, hence he is colored blue. Lord Rama is also associated with virtue, chivalry and truth and his story includes many tales of heroism, such as protecting the weak and innocent against evil. Therefore, Rama is often described as the perfect man and is depicted with blue colored skin.

Rāma is a Vedic Sanskrit word with two contextual meanings. In one context as found in Atharva Veda means “dark, dark-colored, black” and is related to the term ratri which means night. In another context as found in other Vedic texts, the word means “pleasing, delightful, charming, beautiful, lovely”. Don’t change Gods color as per your liking !!!
