Jyotirlingas are the reincarnation of lord Shiva on earth. It is legend that to a devout Shiva baktha, these lingams would appear like fiery columns of light. Shrines of jyotirlingas are viewed as places where people wash off all their earthly sins and seek moksha.

The history behind the origin of jyotirlingas is that once Brahma and Vishnu had a huge clash among themselves to prove themselves as the superior one. Finally Shiva intervened and took the form a huge pillar and gave a task to find the ends of the pillar. The pillar was a never-ending one which encompassed the entire universe and in despair, brahma asked a flower to lie in support of him. Furious by Brahma’s action Shiva cursed Brahma that there would be no temples in his name ever and till today the flower is not used in any sort of puja.

The twelve jyotirlingas are Somnath in Gujarat, Mallikarjuna at Srisailam in Andra Pradesh, Mahakaleswar at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, Kedarnath in Himalayas, Bhimashankar in Maharashtra, Viswanath at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Triambakeshwar in Maharashtra, Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga at Deogarh in Jharkhand, Aundha Nagnath at Aundha Nagnath in Maharashtra, Rameshwar at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and Grishneshwar at Ellora near Aurangabad, Maharashtra.

It is tradition to start one’s pilgrim with the Somnath temple at Gujarat. The temple is an embodiment of India’s rich cultural heritage and bloody wars that led to the temple being reconstructed several times in the past. Next stop ideally would be Varanasi where lord kashi viswanatha resides flanked by the beautiful Ganga River.  Kedarnath in Uttarakhand is northernmost and the nearby Jyotirlinga to Lord Shiva’s eternal dwelling of Mount Kailash.

This is supposed to be 1/2 jyotirlinga, half of Kedarnath is Pashupatinath in Nepal. Kedarnath forms a part of the smaller Char Dham Yatra in Hinduism. Kedarnath, housed in the snow-clad Himalayas, is an ancient shrine, rich in legend and tradition. It is reachable only by foot, and only for six months a year. The entire pilgrimage starts way north and comes to a momentous end in rameshwaram, Deep South. Where Rama, avatar of lord Vishnu has worshipped the Shiva lingam after his victory over ravana.there are 4 jyotirlingas in the state of Maharashtra alone. Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga is the Last of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines on the earth as mentioned in the Shiva Purana. This. It is at close to the world famous Ellora caves. Jyotirlinga at Trimbakeshwar has three faces symbolizing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. This gives it the name trimbakeshwar, which translates to three faces.

This is the only place to perform Kaalsarp dosh puja, Pitru dosh Nivaran puja and Tripindi Shraadha to Kaalsarp Dosha and Pitru Dosha.
