However, both North Indian and South Indian observe it on the same day. Currently, it falls in the month of March or April in English calendar.

Parana means breaking the fast. Ekadashi Parana is done after sunrise on next day of Ekadashi fast. It is necessary to do Parana within Dwadashi Tithi unless Dwadashi is over before sunrise. Not doing Parana within Dwadashi is similar to an offence.

Varuthini Ekadashi Story

Varuthini Ekadashi is mentioned in Bhavishya Purana. Lord Krishna explains the relevance of Varuthini Ekadashi to King Yudhisthira. Krishna says that on this auspicious day animals could free themselves from the cycle of birth and death. Similarly any person suffering from a life threatening disease could be cured if they pray to Lord Vishnu on Varuthini Ekadashi.

It is advised to donate to the needy on Varuthini Ekadashi. A detailed account of objects that could be donated has been listed in Bhavishya Purana. Donating horse, elephant, land, sesame seeds respectively will bring luck to the devotees on Varuthini Ekadashi.

It is believed that if a person decides to donate on Varuthini Ekadashi, the ancestors and family members of the person donating will also benefit. In Hindu mythology, it is generally believed that giving one’s daughter in marriage or performing Kanyadaan is the biggest daan (donation). However, if the devotees perform the fast on Varuthini Ekadashi with full religious fervor, benefit of hundred Kanyadaan follows.
