Rudraksha is a kind of stonefruit whose dried stones are used as prayer beads by Hindus (particularly Shaivas), Buddhists, and Sikhs. Rudraksha stones are frequently referred to as “blueberry beads” because they are covered with an inedible blue outer fruit when ripe. Several species of huge, evergreen, broad-leaved trees in the genus Elaeocarpus yield rudraksha stones, the most common of which is Elaeocarpus ganitrus.

The stones are linked to the Hindu god Shiva and are frequently worn for protection and singing mantras like Om Namah Shivaya. For jewellery and malas (garlands), the stones are largely supplied from India, Indonesia, and Nepal, and are valued comparable to semi-precious stones. Rudraksha stones with varied numbers of “faces” or locules have diverse meanings and interpretations, and uncommon or unique stones are highly cherished and treasured.

Rudra (Sanskrit: रुद्र) and aksha (Sanskrit: अक्ष) combine to form Rudraksha, a Sanskrit compound word. One of Shiva’s Vedic names is Rudra.

Many notable Hindus, like Sivaya Subramuniyaswami and Kamal Narayan Seetha, refer to aksha (Sanskrit: अक्ष) as eyes; hence, rudraksha might be translated as “eyes of Rudra.”
